Creating Your Resume

Resume Writing

Untitled Document

A resume is needed whether you want to progress in your chosen field or whether you are making a career change, to help you in your job search. The resume provides an overview of your experience and skills. To achieve your objectives you must spend time to make your resume as good as possible. The time spent in writing your resume is truly a worthwhile investment.

Here are a few guidelines on how to go about writing a resume:

Step 1

Take notes on your work experience – paid, unpaid and voluntary, full time, part time and internships. Write down your designation or job title, company information and your responsibilities.

Step 2

Take notes on your education. Include degrees, diplomas or certificates, your major or course emphasis, name of school/college/University, specially the names of courses most relevant to your career objectives.

Step 3

Take notes on other accomplishments, such as membership in organizations, and any other special accomplishments such as competitions, debates/trophies won, etc.

Step 4

Now from the notes that you have compiled in steps 1, 2 and 3, choose the skills that are transferable to the job you are applying for - these are the most important points for your resume.

Step 5

Start your resume by writing your full name, your mailing address, telephone number, mobile number and email at the top of your resume.

Step 6

Write your objective. The objective is a short sentence describing what type of work you wish to obtain.

Step 7

Begin writing your work experience starting with your most recent job. Include the company specifics and your responsibilities - focus on the skills you have identified as transferable.

Step 8

Continue to list all of your work experience job by job going backwards in time. Remember to focus on skills that are transferable to the job you are applying for.

Step 9

Summarize your education, including important facts (type of degree/diplomas/certificates earned, specific courses studied) that are applicable to the job you are applying for.

Step 10

Include other relevant information such as languages spoken, MS Office, computer programming knowledge etc. under the heading: Additional Skills

Step 11

Finish with the phrase: REFERENCES Available upon request

Step 12

Your resume should ideally not be any longer than one page. If you have had a number of years of experience specific to the job you are applying for, two pages are also acceptable.

Step 13

Spacing: ADDRESS (center of page in bold) OBJECTIVE double space EXPERIENCE double space EDUCATION double space ADDITIONAL SKILLS double space REFERENCES. Left align everything except your name/address.

Tips:

1. Use dynamic action verbs such as: accomplished, collaborated, encouraged, established,
    facilitated, founded, managed, etc.

2. Do NOT use the subject "I", use tenses in the paste except for your present job. Example:
Conducted routine meetings with the stakeholders of the project
